Description of project:
In this project, I design a Rubikās Cube from scratch without looking at how the mechanism in the commercial version works.
Purpose of project:
The purpose of this project was for me to learn more about designing with a high focus of flow and axis of rotation. Trying to figure out how to design the semi complex mechanism of something such as a rubikās cube really helped me do this. I also simply wanted to vaguely challenge my design and CAD skills.
Challenges:
The biggest challenge in figuring out how to design a rubikās cube is when dealing with connecting many rotating and sliding pieces on multiple axis of motion.
My process:
At first when designing the rubikās cube, I went through a process of trial and error having a vague idea of areas of motion. This included me printing out iterations of CAD and working with it and modifying the pieces so that they would work and I was ready to make changes to the CAD. After further progressing in the project, I realized that I need to think more critically about how the pieces will flow on certain axis of rotation and areas of motion. I essentially identified axis of rotation and areas of motion and modeled cutouts in the pieces accordingly.
