Description of Project:
This project falls under the catagory of branding which is part of business. In this project, I re-designed logos of local business of which I sent and requested for a payment. Specifically, I looked up a list of all the local business in my town and identified all the ones I thought could use a logo re-design. I then made an email list with their company name. After that, I worked on re-designing their logo and emailing them a request for business.
Purpose of Project:
The purpose of this project was to design logos. I am really interested in graphic design and how it creates brand. I believe that brand is the perspective a company expresses to a market about their product. And it is interesting to find out how to create that perspective. I was also interested in learning more about talking with potential clients and doing business. Earning money was also a cool possibility, but it wasn’t my main priority. No question, I definitely achieved some level of this purpose although I would like to work more on it.
My Process:
My process in this project focuses a lot on graphic design principles (more specifically logo design). Since this project was pretty much my first time using software to create logos, I needed to learn a lot. I started out by playing and messing around with the free graphic design software (Inkscape), testing out different tools, features, functions, modes, filters, etc.. Then, I practiced more specific techniques for using the software through following YouTube tutorials. After all this, I more or less knew my way around the program. Now this has only been to be skilled in using the program. I had the tool, I knew how the tool worked, now I needed to use the tool in order to create.
Challenges:
The biggest challenges with this project were creating the logos using Inkscape software. It was my second time using Inkscape (after using it at a summer camp years ago) and I hadn’t done much “official” work with graphic design. My first couple drafts of a logo I was working on were too complex and messy. After putting more time into it, I eventually settled on a couple designs to send. Reaching out to customers wasn’t that much of a hassle because I had some prior experience in doing so.
